Men may not think much about accessories as part of their style, but they’re a big factor, and they’re already in your closet. Watches, belts, hats, sunglasses, tie clips, shoes, and of course, the most important men’s accessory, the wallet, are all a part of the daily routine.

Men tend to see them for the function they serve rather than the fashion value they provide, so ask a standard man which “accessories” he’s carrying and he’s likely to say “None” as he shift his briefcase from one hand to another.

This is sort of the point, though; men’s accessories are about both fashion and function. A perfect example is the scarf and knit cap. They do a job. They keep you warm. The knit cap is especially functional for men rocking a sexy shaved/bald head. It’s a hot look that makes for a cold Winter without some coverage up there, and the knit cap gets it done, while a scarf takes care of the neck and upper body. Ain’t no shame in looking good while staying warm, though.

A chunky chocolate brown knit scarf or teal cashmere in a herringbone pattern is an easy way to add some detail and masculine color.

A grey knit cap can get a bump from a simple black stripe. Like every man knows, it’s all in the details, and it doesn’t take much to go beyond the standard black scarf/black cap Winter uniform to wearing accessories that are about function and fashion.

Business casual mostly adheres to the same basic idea at all times: no jacket, no tie, no denim, no sneakers. It needs to land somewhere in between a suit and tee-shirt/jeans and be fit to be seen by your staff and your clients.

Since the basic idea is separate pieces rather a full-on suit that is bought together and made to go together, you’ve got some freedom in how you assemble your business casual looks. From the feet up, a chocolate brown shoe is less severe than black, and a high shine is sharp and playful. Pants in a textured fabric like wool or corduroy have a rich feel while being comfortable, and look great in dark gray or even dark olive.

The upper body is all about layering and pattern. It looks smart and gives you options if you’re going from inside to outside or going from room to room with different climate controls. A patterned button down shirt under a zip-up sweater will give you the layers and the style. Make sure to get some contrast; light shirt and dark sweater, or vice versa.

Just like business, business casual dressing is about the big picture, and it makes financial sense. Fill any holes in your wardrobe (do you need a few more shirts, a couple new sweaters), pick up a few new items each season to stay on trend, and keep making use of what you’ve got from seasons past.

Cashmere is a classic for a few simple reasons: it looks great, it feels great, and it goes with everything. The cashmere sweater gives an instant style boost to every man who puts it on and it fits with every setting from casual to business to romantic.

Like all classics, it has aged well, and still finds ways to offer some modern options, particularly in color and neck style. A red or tan cashmere hoodie is what you want for winter road trips and day-to-day layering. The maroon or navy v-neck is all business, with dark gray wool slacks and a killer shirt/tie combo.

For date night or game night, the zip neck in Army green or brown works with a tee or a collared shirt. Color and neck style are your real opportunities to get the most out of the look this winter. However you want to dress it, a cashmere sweater works. After all, classics are classic for a reason.
