How To Wear All Grey Like An It Girl
By: Jennifer Wilson
Grey is one of those colors that I always seem to gravitate toward when shopping. It isn’t as harsh as black or as soft as white, but fits perfectly in between. It is such a versatile color, and can be worn during any season and in so many different ways. Some of my favorites for the cooler months are cozy sweaters, warm scarves, booties, long sleeve dresses, handbags of any type, and ballet flats. In the warmer months, I love strappy sandals, flowing dresses, and lightweight gauzy scarves.
To me grey is the ideal neutral and most of my daily outfits actually involve at least one item with a shade of it, something I absolutely adore. I recently color coordinated my entire closet, which was no small feat, and swapped out my spring/summer pieces for fall/winter items, which has helped keep everything organized and much easier to find. I found out that more than half of my closet is a shade of grey. I actually bought a pair of grey booties about three years ago on a trip to New York, and to this day, the second the weather cools a bit, I throw them on with anything I can. I even wear them in the beginning of spring and summer before the weather gets too warm to pull them off.
Lately, I have been especially into all monochromatic color schemes when getting dressed in the morning or for any occasion. I love the idea of wearing a mix of light and dark grey hues together in an outfit. I think that when wearing a look with the same color scheme, it is important to remember a few key things before getting dressed, one being to make sure that there are varying textures in the pieces you pair together. Second, it is necessary to make sure that the color tones are different so that everything isn’t flat looking.
Last but definitely not least, I love to mix in some sort of metallic piece in the same color family for an added pop and to keep things interesting. For an all grey ensemble, a silver piece is the perfect add on that is still in the same coloring, but with a little glitz thrown in. I attended a birthday party recently where I chose to wear a dress that I have had for at least five years and was trying to figure out how to breathe new life into it without getting rid of it. It has a few layered details in the front and is a few inches above the knee, so I decided to throw on one of my favorite lightweight chunky knits to add a different look and dimension to the mini. I added my most loved grey booties (of course) and a silver fold over metallic clutch for a little added sparkle and was set for the festive and celebratory evening out on the town.
