Style Runway - Shoes & Handbags - If the Shoe Fits…
By Samantha Liebman
4/11/2012 10:33:00 AM
Just because you have to wear a suit or more conservative business attire for work doesn’t mean your inner fashionista can’t shine through. And one way to give an outfit a bit of a kick is to wear a great pair of shoes. I know I feel better when I’m wearing a fun, quirky pair that completes my outfit, even if no one actually sees them (and they often don’t since I’m on TV).

Especially when the weather is cold, instead of wearing a plain, black pump or knee-high boot—although kitten heels are looking good these days for both style and comfort—wear a bootie, an ankle boot. These Giuseppe Zanotti “Cindy” ankle boots in suede or leather can go with either a skirt suit or separates, a flowing mid-length or pencil skirt to the knee. Even better is the price: I found these at Loehmann’s Chelsea (New York City) reduced to $284.98.

If it’s too cold to bare so much leg, a taller bootie with cropped tapered pants can still look professional. At $139, the Rosegold’s are perfection.

Some of us don’t have the luxury of sitting at a desk all day—we have to stand or even run through airports to make a shuttle flight to a meeting—but we can be comfortable and still look great. A thick (not chunky) heel with a platform looks sexy while helping to reduce the burden of a steep incline. And Loehmann’s Chelsea delivered again with a great pair from Mark and James (as in Badgley Mischka) in patent leather for $169.99.

Of course, this time of year you cannot go without stockings. Before you make your way to the checkout counter, check out the pattern or textured stocking, but nothing too over the top; we’re still going to work after all. Stockings can be the final touch that makes all the difference.

Style Runway - Shoes & Handbags - Shoe Trend: Booties & Wedges
By Loehmanns.com
3/27/2012 10:59:00 AM

Shoe style right now means booties and wedges. The uber-trendy can even put them together in a wedge bootie.

Truly, the options are nearly endless at present as every shoe line is loving this approach. Can you blame them? They’re sexy, chic, and playful all at the same time, work in day and evening, dressed up or down.

Pointy toe or square, shiny or matte, brown, black, leopard, suede, patent, two-tone, lace up, peep toe, platform, and pump.

Even the casual shopper has to work pretty hard to not end up with a few booties and wedges in their regular rotation this winter. Good thing, then, that they fit into to almost any look and seem likely to be on trend right through Spring. Seriously, you can’t lose.

Style Runway - Women - Sparkle Me Pretty
By Karen Poulin
3/24/2012 8:16:00 AM

As a personal stylist, my main goal is to help my client meet clothing and accessory needs based on his or her particular combination of age, body shape, lifestyle.

After making sure my client has the best self- esteem possible by helping him or her attain the perfect fit, it is time to throw in some of the current trend.  The addition of fashion-forward details to a correctly fitted outfit is what allows someone to stand out with extra “oomph” if worn correctly.

There are so many trends that have come into play in the last few years ranging from wedge and platforms shoes, color blocking, high waist pants and finally, sequins! Sequins were once thought to be reserved for evening wear and holiday dress.  When worn outside of those parameters, some may have considered them a tad gauche.  Not anymore. Designers everywhere have made it possible to wear sequins night and day and on virtually every part of the body, but please, not at the same time!

Personally, sequins have become my obsession. I opened up a recent edition of Lucky Magazine to find the editor talking about how to wear a sequined top during the day. She mentioned knowing someone who had taken a simple sparkled blouse over a black turtleneck and wearing a pair of pants, jeans or a skirt with heels and you have a killer daytime outfit. In May of 2011 Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor, adorned the red carpet for the Met Gala in a full length sequined Chanel gown. For anyone who knows style, if Anna is wearing it, then it is IN! Other stars, celebrities and style icons have caught on to this trend by wearing anything from sequin shoes, shorts, blouses, tops, skirts and handbags.

Still apprehensive? Perhaps you feel that your profession requires that you dress conservatively and you are caught in the daily rut of wearing the basic suit or a bland skirt and blouse.  Not a problem.  Add a sequined handbag, cami, or shoes and your look will instantly be transformed from suburban blues to city chic.  Worried about your shape or size?  Many people believe they cannot wear a specific trend because it draws attention to their least favorite part of their body.  There is a simple solution.  Don’t wear the sequins there. Wear the sequins on the part of your body where you want the attention drawn or on a great handbag that allows you to show your more festive, dare I say cheery disposition.  It takes the edge off of edgy and adds some flare to the understated.

Sequins also offer the ability to transition your wardrobe from day to night.  The main thing to remember about sequins is that too much of a good thing is a very bad thing.  Pick your piece and stick with it.  Mixing multiple textures is great; multiple sequins, well, just all wrong!

The most important shopping standard to remember with regard to sequins, or any other trend for that matter, is to evaluate your personal budget. If you can’t afford to splurge for extras in your wardrobe, you can buy less expensive accessory pieces.  If you have the means, then spend more money to add sophistication to your look.  With sequins, spending more means they will have a better shine and are less likely to disassemble with use.  In my opinion, it basically comes down to lifestage.  A girl in her twenties can get away with the trendy stores that sell the less expensive sequins, but when you want to go all out in style and show that you truly embrace class and style, then you may want to upgrade your sequin purchases to a finer store like Loehmann’s.

From www.Loehmanns.com , you can find designers with just a touch of or full on flare of sequins such as Eli Tahari, BCBG, Romeo and Juliet, Rampage and even more.  These looks include everything from blouses, to skirts and dresses and even jackets.  Start searching online or visit a nearby store to take advantage of this fun trend by wearing a statement outfit or accessorizing with a statement piece.

Style Runway - Men - Business Casual
By Loehmanns.com
3/19/2012 6:41:00 PM

Business casual mostly adheres to the same basic idea at all times: no jacket, no tie, no denim, no sneakers. It needs to land somewhere in between a suit and tee-shirt/jeans and be fit to be seen by your staff and your clients.

Since the basic idea is separate pieces rather a full-on suit that is bought together and made to go together, you’ve got some freedom in how you assemble your business casual looks. From the feet up, a chocolate brown shoe is less severe than black, and a high shine is sharp and playful. Pants in a textured fabric like wool or corduroy have a rich feel while being comfortable, and look great in dark gray or even dark olive.

The upper body is all about layering and pattern. It looks smart and gives you options if you’re going from inside to outside or going from room to room with different climate controls. A patterned button down shirt under a zip-up sweater will give you the layers and the style. Make sure to get some contrast; light shirt and dark sweater, or vice versa.

Just like business, business casual dressing is about the big picture, and it makes financial sense. Fill any holes in your wardrobe (do you need a few more shirts, a couple new sweaters), pick up a few new items each season to stay on trend, and keep making use of what you’ve got from seasons past.

That’s how to keep business casual from just being business as usual.
